Sustainability in Focus: The Opportunities Sailing Offers to Brands

Wind, waves, and open water - few sports are as deeply rooted in nature as sailing. But its appeal to brands extends well beyond sustainability alone. At a time when many sponsorship opportunities are judged primarily by audience numbers, sailing provides something different: access to valuable target groups, authentic stories, and influential networks.
The Ocean Race Atlantic, launching in September 2026, is the latest example of why sailing continues to grow in importance as a platform for purpose-led partnerships, thought leadership, and impactful brand communication.

Relevance Over Reach: Why Sailing Works Differently for Brands
Brands that evaluate sponsorships solely based on audience size often overlook what makes sailing truly valuable. The strength of the platform lies less in the scale of its reach and more in its ability to connect brands with attractive and often hard-to-access target groups, while fostering the kind of high-quality relationships that are increasingly difficult to build elsewhere. Unlike many mass-market sports, where value is often driven by maximum visibility, sailing creates impact through maximum relevance. For brands, it offers the opportunity to bring customers, partners, and stakeholders together in an exclusive setting. Personal interactions, shared experiences, and premium hospitality formats create the foundation for long-term relationships that go far beyond traditional advertising impact.
Another key advantage is the unique mix of attributes and narratives that sailing authentically embodies. Technology and innovation play just as important a role as performance, adventure, and entrepreneurial spirit. At the same time, a close connection to nature, ocean conservation, and collaboration with science and research shape many of the sport’s leading teams and projects. This creates an environment that provides companies with credible and compelling themes for both brand positioning and communication.
Powerful Stories at Sea: Why Sailing Creates Authentic Brand Narratives
Beyond reaching valuable target audiences, sailing offers companies something equally important: compelling stories and meaningful opportunities for brand positioning. Technology and innovation are just as integral to the sport as high performance under extreme conditions, adventure, entrepreneurial thinking, and the ability to navigate uncertainty and change.
At the same time, sailing is inherently connected to nature. Wind, weather, and the conditions on the world’s oceans are not merely external factors, but an integral part of the competition itself. As a result, the sport generates narratives that feel authentic and credible, extending far beyond traditional sponsorship messaging.
This is particularly evident when it comes to sustainability and ocean conservation. Few sports experience the impact of environmental and climate change as directly as sailing. Many teams therefore take an active role in protecting the oceans, collaborate with scientific institutions, or collect data during races to support research projects. In this environment, sustainability communication is not an added marketing initiative, but a natural reflection of the realities of the sport.

Ocean Race Europe: Ocean Conservation as a Unifying Theme
The Ocean Race stop in Kiel demonstrated how sustainability topics can bring people and organizations together far beyond the world of sport. A wide range of initiatives focused on ocean conservation and the responsible use of marine resources were created around the event, highlighting the power of shared environmental challenges to inspire collaboration and action.
One example was THW Kiel’s För de Küste initiative, which used ocean conservation as a common platform for dialogue and engagement. The initiative showed how relevant sustainability issues can create meaningful connections and encourage cooperation across different sectors.
The example illustrates that sustainability challenges do not stop at the boundaries of individual sports. Instead, they can serve as catalysts for new forms of collaboration between sport, business, science, and civil society, creating impact that reaches far beyond the competition itself.

Malizia 4: Where Elite Sailing, Science, and Sustainability Converge
With Malizia 4, Team Malizia has unveiled the next generation of its offshore racing yachts. Developed and built over a two-year period, the new IMOCA race boat is set to take the team into future editions of The Ocean Race and the Vendée Globe. Designed to perform at the highest level, the yacht combines cutting-edge sailing technology, powerful foils, and an optimized energy and propulsion system to remain competitive across a wide range of conditions.
At the same time, Team Malizia continues its mission of combining elite sport with scientific research and raising awareness of ocean conservation. Through Malizia 4, the team is once again demonstrating how high-performance sailing can serve as a platform for both innovation and environmental responsibility.
Take a closer look at the new Malizia 4 here.
Boris Herrmann is inseparably linked to this project. Through his participation in the world’s most prestigious offshore races, his commitment to climate and ocean protection, and his ability to connect elite sport with science and social responsibility, he has become one of the defining figures of German sailing in recent years. For brands, this creates a unique opportunity: Herrmann not only represents sporting excellence and technological innovation, but also embodies values such as entrepreneurship, responsibility, and a forward-looking mindset.

Turning Tides: How Sponsorship Becomes a B2B Platform
A strong example of how partnerships like these can be activated was Turning Tides, an event hosted by Team Malizia together with KPMG and Zurich. At its core were discussions around future-focused topics, shared experiences, and networking opportunities for sustainability, strategy, and business leaders from major organizations. In doing so, the event engaged exactly the audiences both companies interact with in their day-to-day business.
What made the format particularly compelling was its combination of business relevance and inspiring storytelling. Rather than focusing on ESG regulation, risk assessments, or transformation strategies through traditional presentations, Team Malizia used its experiences in elite sport, innovation, sustainability, and ocean conservation to create an authentic and engaging starting point for discussion. The result was not only insightful conversations, but also a shared sense of purpose and the feeling of being part of a wider mission.
The example demonstrated how sailing can be used as a platform for high-value B2B communication, thought leadership, and long-term relationship building. At the same time, the format created space for expert discussions around real-world challenges. As part of a dedicated masterclass, SPORTFIVE and Zurich Resilience Solutions, for example, explored approaches to climate adaptation in sport and highlighted the potential impact of increasingly extreme weather events on sports venues, events, and day-to-day operations. By combining inspiring stories with practical solutions, the event delivered value that extended far beyond a traditional client engagement.
Looking Ahead: Key Sailing Highlights Through 2028
Sailing’s evolution as a platform for sustainable and international brand communication is set to continue in the years ahead. With the Ocean Race Atlantic from New York to Lorient in September 2026 and the start of the next Ocean Race in January 2027, the sport’s next major global milestones are already on the horizon. These will be followed by prestigious events such as the 2027 America’s Cup in Naples and the 2028 Vendée Globe, both of which regularly capture the attention of millions of fans worldwide. At the same time, competitions such as SailGP and Germany’s Sailing Bundesliga provide year-round visibility and ongoing activation opportunities for partners.
Sailing therefore offers brands far more than traditional exposure. The platform’s unique strength lies in its ability to combine access to relevant audiences with authentic storytelling and purpose-driven topics, precisely the elements that are playing an increasingly important role in successful modern sponsorships.
